Athanasia key art showing a prehistoric predator in the secret laboratory

A new entrant just crawled out of a secret laboratory and onto Steam’s Early Access charts. Athanasia, developed and published by Neon Doctrine, launched into Early Access this week, pitched by press as “Dino Crisis meets System Shock” — an immersive sim that blends survival, horror, and first-person shooting into one tense package. You can grab it, plus a free demo, on its official Steam store page.

Gameplay: Survival Horror in a Forgotten Lab

Athanasia drops players into a secret research facility that has been quietly overrun by prehistoric predators — creatures “unseen for millions of years” that have no business walking the Earth again. Your job is twofold: survive the things stalking the corridors, and piece together how, and why, they came back at all.

Rather than playing as a straightforward shooter, Athanasia leans into immersive-sim systems. Expect to duck through hidden pathways to avoid a fight entirely, craft healing items on the fly, and rig up traps and distractions to buy yourself a window to escape or counterattack. Hacking computers scattered through the lab opens up new routes and secrets, while sneaking past patrolling threats is often the smarter play than a straight confrontation. Scattered audio logs left behind by the facility’s former staff fill in the story of what went wrong, layering environmental storytelling on top of the horror.

It’s a promising pitch for horror fans burned out on jump-scare corridors with nothing else going on: a lab full of systems to exploit, predators smart enough to punish carelessness, and a mystery worth digging through audio logs to unravel.

If Athanasia’s lab full of dinosaurs sounds like your kind of Early Access gamble, now’s a good time to top up before you buy. Dragon4Deals carries Steam Wallet codes for just about every region, including the Steam Wallet Code (EU), so you can pick up Athanasia and its free demo without reaching for a card. And if this one scratches an itch, our horror games section has plenty more lab-coat nightmares to dig into next.
