Masters of Albion, Peter Molyneux’s return to the “god game” genre he helped invent with Populous and Black & White, has been in Steam Early Access since April 2026. On October 26, developer 22cans shipped its biggest update yet, called “New Beginnings,” and it touches nearly every system in the game.

What Changed in New Beginnings

  • Arcadium tech tree replaced with a card-based system, built from the ground up because, in Molyneux’s words, the old tree “wasn’t compatible with the nighttime buff cards.”
  • Around 200 new buffs that players earn by winning nighttime battles.
  • Product orders now carry narrative context, and the design table has been reworked with built-in tips for new players.
  • Orkenstone corruption now spreads across the land every night, raising the stakes of letting it go unchecked.
  • The god hand can now interact with far more objects in the world, and the game’s opening sequence has been remastered.
  • Mysterious colossal structures have started appearing across the map. Molyneux has only teased that “there is a clue to it — it’s a hidden thing,” without elaborating further.
  • Performance improvements push the game to an average of 60 to 80 frames per second, well past Molyneux’s original target of “30 frames a second for everybody for the recommended system specs.”

A Six-Month Early Access Glow-Up

Masters of Albion launched into Steam Early Access back in April, billed by Molyneux as the culmination of his career. Six months on, New Beginnings is the clearest sign yet that 22cans is still actively reworking the game’s core loop rather than just patching bugs — exactly the kind of mid-Early-Access overhaul that can make or break a god game’s eventual full launch.
