Monster Hunter Wilds Weapon Tier List: The Best (and Worst) Weapons Right Now

Monster Hunter Wilds has been out long enough now that its 14-weapon roster has settled into a clear pecking order. Cross-referencing current community tier lists and endgame clear data, here’s where every weapon type lands right now, plus what actually makes the top picks work.

S-Tier: The Best Weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds

The current S-tier is led by four weapons that show up at or near the top of nearly every community ranking:
  • Long Sword: Its Spirit Gauge and Spirit Blade combo stack a buff that boosts damage and lets you chain into Helm Breaker, Monster Hunter’s signature high-damage finisher. High mobility, fast attacks, and consistently near the top of every ranking.
  • Bow: The best ranged option in the game. Strong mobility, precise weak-point targeting from a distance, and coatings that let a single weapon flex between damage, status, and utility roles.
  • Dual Blades: Demon Mode massively increases attack speed and chains into some of the highest sustained DPS combos in the game, at the cost of defense while it’s active.
  • Gunlance: Works at both melee and ranged, and its Wyrmstake Blast and Full Burst combos deal heavy raw and elemental damage that can topple monsters outright.

A-Tier and Below

Below that, A-tier covers Great Sword (hits hardest in the game but demands careful positioning due to slow, committed swings), Heavy Bowgun and Light Bowgun (both strong but ammo-management heavy), Charge Blade (high skill ceiling, strong burst via Savage Axe mode), Hunting Horn (unmatched team utility through buff songs), and Sword and Shield (fast, mobile, and the only weapon that can use items without sheathing). B-tier holds Switch Axe and Hammer, both solid but currently outclassed by faster options. C-tier is Insect Glaive and Lance — still capable in skilled hands, but requiring more setup or positioning discipline than the weapons above them for similar payoff.

Long Sword Build Basics

For Long Sword specifically, the current meta build leans on Focus to fill the Spirit Gauge faster, Burst for a temporary affinity boost on dodge-into-attack timing, and either Flinch Free or Marathon Runner to keep stamina available for repositioning around a monster’s hitbox. Decorations that boost Spirit Gauge generation or affinity are worth prioritizing over raw attack boosts once your base weapon is strong enough.

Getting the Most Out of the Bow

Bow builds live and die by coating management: matching Power or Close-Range coatings to your damage type, keeping Element coatings stocked for weak elemental matchups, and running Stamina Surge so you can maintain Power Shot uptime without running dry mid-fight. Bow is also one of the most mount- and gear-flexible weapons in Wilds, since its damage scales well with both raw and elemental builds.
