Path of Exile 2‘s 0.4 patch, "Fate of the Vaal," reshuffled the build meta with new uniques and skill tuning. If you’re starting fresh or looking to switch off a build that fell off, here’s the current tier-list consensus — with the actual gear and gems behind each pick, not just a verdict.
S-Tier: Build These If You Want to Clear Everything
Frostbolt Pathfinder — the Pathfinder ascendancy grants full immunity to movement-speed slows, and pairing it with the Snakepit unique ring lets your Frostbolt projectiles fork and overlap for massive stacked damage. Strong at both mapping and single-target boss damage, with very little downside.
Trinity Infusion Stormweaver — runs all three elemental infusions (fire, cold, lightning) at once for compounding damage multipliers. No real gap between clear speed and boss damage, which is rare for a caster build.
Sorcery Ward Witchhunter — stacks Sorcery Ward damage absorption with infusion spell scaling and spirit stacking. Tanky enough to feel "nearly immortal" while still hitting hard, and keeps good movement speed for mapping.
Archmage Spark Stormweaver — built around the Sione’s Temper gem, firing projectile novas that chain up to 13 times. Stacks over 10,000 energy shield for defense while still clearing screens and bosses fast.
A-Tier: Strong, More Gear-Dependent Picks
Mirage Ice Shot Deadeye — Ice Shot got direct buffs this patch, and stacking it with Tornado Shot creates screen-wide overlapping clear. Grab Cadiro’s Gambit and Hyrri’s Ire for guaranteed crits and doubled evasion.
Crossbow Titan — leans on the Titan ascendancy’s +50% effect on small passives for defense, with reliable (if not flashy) crossbow damage. A safer pick if you’d rather not pilot a glass cannon.
Siege Cascade Tactician — the Couture of Crimson chest enables life-leech overflow that effectively doubles your survivability; paired with Undying Hate and Amanamu, it can face-tank nearly every piece of content in the game.
Plant Druid — the budget, beginner-friendly option. One-button gameplay through Entangle, with energy-shield stacking and the Convalescence node for large life restoration. Cheap to start and surprisingly tanky.
Two More Worth Knowing
Volcano Bow Oracle — combines rapid Volcano spam with Shockwave Totems for screen-wide mapping clear; the Oracle ascendancy’s Inevitable Criticals amplifies damage, and the Unnamed Heartwood unique keeps your totems alive without babysitting them.
Crit Bow Deadeye — took defensive nerfs this patch, but projectile scaling is still excellent for clearing packs and single targets alike. A fine pick if you already have bow gear invested from a prior league.
Which Should You Actually Start With?
If this is a fresh league start with no currency, go Plant Druid — it clears content on cheap gear and won’t leave you stuck rebuilding. If you’ve got some trade currency and want a league-starter that scales into endgame bosses without a rebuild, Frostbolt Pathfinder is the safest S-tier pick.
