Facepunch Studios kicked off Rust’s monthly forced wipe on September 3, 2026 at 19:00 UTC with the Breach and Clear update, and it reshapes several core survival loops at once. Between a reworked Tool Cupboard upkeep system, a new early-game healing item, fresh routes to High Quality Metal, and tougher defenses around red-keycard loot, this is one of the more mechanically significant monthly patches Rust has shipped in 2026. If you are stocking up for the new wipe, grab your copy on Steam before you dive back in.

Tool Cupboard Upkeep Now Scales With Group Size

The headline mechanical change is group-scaled Tool Cupboard upkeep. Instead of a flat upkeep cost per base regardless of headcount, larger clans now pay more resources to keep their TC topped up as additional players get authorized on it, while solo and duo bases see no extra cost. The change is aimed squarely at the resource-hoarding advantage big groups have historically held, forcing blobs to actually farm to match their base footprint instead of splitting a fixed upkeep bill across a dozen players.

New Tier 1 Healing: The Medical Honey Bandage

New players and early-wipe raiders also get a new tool in the medical kit: the Medical Honey Bandage. It sits at Tier 1, above the basic cloth bandage, and it can restore health immediately on use while also applying healing over time and cutting down bleed damage. It is a solid bridge item for the awkward window before you have farmed enough components for syringes or medkits, and it is cheap enough to craft in bulk for early firefights.

More Ways to Find HQM

High Quality Metal has historically been one of the tightest bottlenecks on a fresh wipe, and Breach and Clear loosens that a little. The update adds new HQM ore nodes and ground pickups scattered across the map, giving players an extra way to scrape together HQM outside of barrels, road signs, and full-blown monument runs. It will not replace grinding Sulfur for smelting, but it gives small groups a fighting chance at building electric setups and tier 3 workbenches earlier in the cycle.

Monument Blockades Guard Red-Keycard Rooms

Getting into red-card rooms just got a bit harder. Facepunch added temporary, destructible Monument Blockades that guard the entrances to red-keycard loot rooms at monuments like the Military Tunnels and Launch Site. They can be blown open with explosives or slowly worn down by decay, with the decay timer only starting 24 hours after the blockade spawns. It is a deliberate speed bump against zerg groups that used to steamroll red-card loot within hours of wipe.

Helicopters and Hot Air Balloons Take Staged Durability Damage

Air support just got less reliable under fire. Both the Patrol Helicopter and the Hot Air Balloon now lose durability in stages when they take sustained damage to their cabin, rather than shrugging off prolonged fire the way they used to. Groups that lean on a minicopter or HAB gunner to soak damage during raids and rotations will need to factor in that their ride can degrade mid-fight instead of holding up indefinitely.

70+ New World Models and Balance Changes

Rounding out the patch, Facepunch shipped more than 70 new world models for various items across the game, alongside the usual pass of balance tweaks and quality-of-life fixes. None of it is as headline-grabbing as the TC upkeep rework, but it is a reminder that Rust’s monthly wipes are as much about steady content churn as they are about big mechanical swings.

As always, a fresh wipe means a fresh grind, and having a stocked Steam wallet ready to go makes it easier to pick up skins, DLC, or another PC game while you wait out the queue. If you just need funds loaded fast, a Steam Wallet Code (US) delivers instantly so you are never stuck outside the base you just spent all night building.
