Unknown Worlds detailed Early Access 2.0 for Subnautica 2 on October 21, 2026, calling it the largest update since the game entered Early Access in May 2026. The studio says Subnautica 2 is expected to stay in Early Access for two to three years, and this update is the first major step beyond the initial release content.

A New Region to Explore

The headline addition is a full, playable new region built around several new biomes, which Creative Director Anthony Gallegos described as one of the team’s creepiest yet. The area expands the story around the Cicada’s colonists and introduces more of the setting’s other beings, continuing threads the base Early Access release left open.

The Collector Leviathan Gets Scarier

Unknown Worlds is also reworking the Collector Leviathan, one of the game’s signature deep-sea threats, to behave in a more frightening way — though the studio hasn’t detailed exactly what that means for its AI or attack patterns yet. On the traversal side, the Tadpole submersible is getting a new chassis, and datamined files suggest it may gain arms and legs, hinting at new ways to interact with the world outside the sub. Unknown Worlds also confirmed new gadgets, biomods, and base-building options are part of the update, though a release date hasn’t been set.

Why This Matters

Subnautica 2 launched into Early Access with a strong debut — over 1 million copies sold and more than 460,000 concurrent Steam players at peak — and Unknown Worlds has been explicit that the game’s roadmap stretches years, not months. Early Access 2.0 is the clearest signal yet of how much content is still planned before a full 1.0 release. Subnautica 2 is available on Steam now in Early Access, and if you’re after more underwater survival in the meantime, No Man’s Sky is also discounted. Both are easy to pick up with a Steam Wallet Code, and the Simulation section of the store has plenty more survival and sim picks to fill the wait between updates.
