Marathon’s Next Big Update Slips to December as Bungie Ditches Seasons for a Destiny 2 Playbook

Bungie is delaying Marathon’s next major content drop, the Symbiosis update, from its original September target to December 2026, and is scrapping the strict seasonal schedule that was supposed to carry the extraction shooter through its first year. The studio says the change is about giving its team room to build, test, and improve features properly rather than hit fixed dates. You can follow Marathon and grab it on Steam, and a Steam Wallet Code covers it if you want to jump in before the December update.
What Was Supposed to Ship in September
Symbiosis was originally pencilled in for September as part of Marathon’s seasonal cadence. Bungie has now pushed it to December, a three-month slip that effectively removes a full season from the game’s planned first-year content schedule.
Why Bungie Pulled the Plug on Seasons
The studio’s stated reason is progression balance: under the strict seasonal model, some players were racing through content far faster than others, leaving a widening gap between hardcore and casual raiders. Ending the fixed-season structure is meant to let Bungie tune pacing and features before they ship instead of patching them after the fact under a deadline.
What's Coming in December's Symbiosis Update
When Symbiosis does arrive in December, it brings a permanent PvE mode (previously only available as a temporary experiment), a new Runner shell social space that includes a firing range, and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode. All three lean further into the kind of persistent, social, Destiny-like structure Bungie has built its reputation on.
An October 6 Stopgap
In the meantime, Bungie is shipping an interim refresh on October 6 to tide players over: a reset of progression and the in-game economy, a refreshed reward pool, and the temporary return of the Vault Breaker PvE mode.
Echoes of Destiny 2
The parallel to Destiny 2 is not lost on anyone watching closely. Bungie’s flagship shooter made a similar pivot away from strict seasonality years ago, a move that ultimately did not save it from winding down major support earlier this year. Whether the same playbook works better for Marathon, a game still fighting to find its footing, is the open question hanging over December’s update.
