Patch 0.5 of Path of Exile 2, built around the Return of the Ancients content update, is still the live ruleset while Grinding Gear Games works toward the game’s full 1.0 release, planned for December 2026. With a fresh wave of ascendancy and passive tree changes in play, here’s where the build meta currently stands, tier by tier, along with the defensive fundamentals every build needs regardless of class.

S-Tier Builds

Lightning Arrow Deadeye (Ranger → Deadeye): the most-played endgame build in the current patch. The core setup fires Lightning Arrow, which chains between enemies, supported by Added Lightning Damage, Chain Support, and Faster Attacks, with Herald of Thunder running passively for extra clear speed. It scales smoothly from cheap starter gear all the way to a fully min-maxed character, needs no expensive uniques to function, and leans on the Wind Ward keystone for survivability while investing in Gathering Winds for damage.

Spark Stormweaver (Sorceress → Stormweaver): the strongest single-target caster build in the current meta. Spark’s projectile spam gives it the highest damage ceiling of any caster archetype, which makes it the go-to pick for grinding out Pinnacle bosses once your mana-scaling gear is in place.

A-Tier Builds

Chaos Erasure Dot / Contagion Lich (Witch → Lich): uses Erasure Dot paired with Contagion to spread the damage-over-time effect to nearby enemies on a kill. Because chaos damage ignores both armor and elemental resistances, this build clears yellow-tier maps on little more than campaign-found gear, adding a Despair curse in early maps for extra resistance shred.

Spirit Walker (Huntress → new Ascendancy): one of the patch’s new Ascendancies, with real league-start potential. Early theorycrafting points to strong Pinnacle value through its Bear Spirit companion interactions, though the build is still being refined by the community.

Ignite Infernalist (Witch → Infernalist): climbed into A-tier this patch after reworked Titan passive-tree nodes gave ignite-stacking builds a meaningful damage boost.

B-Tier and Budget Options

Tempest Bell (Monk → Invoker): capable of massive per-hit burst damage once you’ve invested in the right support gear, though it’s slower to get going than the S-tier picks. Budget-friendly alternatives worth considering include Bear Druid on the Shaman class and an Explosive Crossbow setup on Mercenary Deadeye, both of which hold up reasonably well without a big currency investment.

Defensive Fundamentals for Any Build

Whichever build you settle on, the same defensive rules apply across Patch 0.5. Cap all three elemental resistances at 75% before you push into red-tier maps (T11–T16), and ideally have them there well before T6. Commit to one defensive pool, either Life or Energy Shield, rather than splitting investment between both — and note that Energy Shield-stacking builds specifically received caps this patch that trim down raw ES totals, so plan your gear around the new ceiling rather than older guides.

For a deeper breakdown of gem links and passive trees for each of these builds, Maxroll’s Path of Exile 2 build meta tracker is kept updated as the community refines its numbers.
