Path of Exile 2 Best Builds: Twister Spirit Walker, Whirling Assault, and Iceshot Deadeye

Path of Exile 2's Current Meta: Patch 0.5.4e, "Return of the Ancients"
The “Return of the Ancients” league (patch 0.5.x) has been running on Path of Exile 2 since May 29, 2026, with the current build at 0.5.4e. A pre-1.0 balance patch (0.5.5) and the full 1.0 free-to-play release are both expected later this year. Per Maxroll’s build guide database and RankedMeta’s current tier list, this patch’s S-tier includes Spark Archmage Stormweaver, Twister Gemling Legionnaire, Falling Thunder Invoker, Flameblast Gemling Legionnaire, Twister Spirit Walker, and Lightning Spear Amazon. Below are three builds worth running right now, plus a beginner’s cheat sheet if you’re just starting out.
Best League Starter: Twister Spirit Walker

Main skill: Twister, supported by Blindside (crit damage), Concentrated Area, Projectile Acceleration III, Elemental Armament II, and Prolonged Duration II. Whirling Slash handles mana sustain, Barrage builds Frenzy Charges, and an Elemental Weakness curse setup rounds out the damage. On the passive tree, prioritize the Frenzy Charge cluster (Frenetic), Spectral Ward for energy shield from evasion armor, and the nearby crit/projectile nodes. Key gear: Kollr’s Hunt rune-modded gloves, a Slipstrike Vest with Deflection, a Taming Prismatic Ring for consistent Ignite/Chilled Ground uptime, and Time-Lost Emerald jewels. Stat priority: Lightning Damage, then Projectile Speed, then Crit Damage, then Skill Level, then Evasion/Deflection – cap elemental resistances between 75-90%.
Best Overall: Whirling Assault Martial Artist

This build spawns Hollow Form clones that repeatedly cast Whirling Assault, and it leans entirely on one unique item: Lochtonial Caress, a pair of Tempered Mitts rolling 40 Armour, 10-15% increased Skill Speed, +15-25 Armour, +40-60 maximum Life, reduced maximum Mana, and its build-defining mod – “Share Charges with Allies in your Presence.” The result is a build with outstanding boss damage that’s also extremely tanky, making it the closest thing to an all-rounder in the current S-tier.
Clear-Speed Pick: Iceshot Deadeye

Iceshot Deadeye opens with a Snipe-focused rotation early before transitioning into a pure Iceshot setup for endgame maps. It’s prized for excellent clear speed, and recent balance patches have improved its survivability enough that it holds up in higher-tier maps without a full defensive rebuild.
New to PoE2? Start Here
Pick a starting class based on your instincts: Mercenary (crossbow and grenades) suits players coming from FPS games, Huntress (spear, melee/ranged hybrid) is the easiest entry point, and Warrior (heavy melee and shield) fits Soulslike veterans. On currency, spend Transmutation and Augmentation orbs freely through Acts 1-3, but never burn Chaos, Exalted, or Divine orbs on campaign gear – item-level caps make it disposable anyway. The five mistakes that sink new characters fastest: overspending rare currency early, underestimating how resistance scales (going from 70% to 75% resist cuts roughly 17% more incoming damage, not 5%), spreading supports across multiple skills instead of concentrating them on one, wandering the passive tree with no plan before level 40, and vendor-selling rare orbs instead of trading them (player trade is worth 10-20x vendor price). Target resistances above 40% through Acts 1-2, the 75% cap before Cruel Mode, and chaos resistance of 40-50% by Tier 6 maps, climbing to 75%+ before Tier 11 and beyond.
