Queen’s Domain, a King’s Field Throwback RPG, Launches on Steam and Already Has Fans Hooked

Indie studio Freshly Baked Games and publisher Future Friends Games have released Queen’s Domain on Steam this week, a retro-style first-person fantasy action RPG built as a direct throwback to FromSoftware’s King’s Field, the series widely credited as the spiritual progenitor of the entire Souls-like genre.
A Love Letter to King's Field
Queen’s Domain drops players on the Isle of Neasied in search of a missing father, armed with the Legendary Holy Sword Endu, a weapon that doubles as a traversal tool, letting players fly between floating platforms and across gaps that would otherwise be dead ends. The low-poly, retro-fantasy art style has drawn comparisons not just to King’s Field but to the broader wave of PS1-era dungeon crawlers currently enjoying a nostalgia-fueled revival on PC.
50,000 Wishlists and Counting
The game built serious buzz ahead of launch, racking up more than 50,000 Steam wishlists within roughly a week of its reveal, according to the developers. That kind of early traction for a first-person action RPG from a small studio is notable, and it suggests Queen’s Domain has tapped into real pent-up demand for King’s Field-style dungeon crawling that modern AAA studios rarely attempt anymore.
What's in the Package
Under the hood, Queen’s Domain leans on a stamina meter, charge attacks, weapon special moves, and throwable secondary weapons to keep first-person melee combat varied. The full game ships with more than 50 melee weapons, over 20 throwable secondary weapons, and upwards of 100 enemies and bosses to fight through, alongside XP-based leveling and food items that grant temporary stat boosts across what the developers describe as dozens of hours of exploration.
Try Before You Buy
Not sure if the Isle of Neasied is for you? A free demo covering the opening area, a first dungeon, and a boss fight, roughly an hour of content, is available on the same Steam page, so you can try the Holy Sword’s flight mechanic before committing. If you like what you find, our Steam gift cards and RPG picks are a quick way to grab it and a few more dungeon crawlers besides.
