Season 5 reshuffled the Black Ops 7 multiplayer meta again. Treyarch’s mid-season patch nerfed one former staple, buffed a fan-favorite AR, and added the FG42 as an immediate top pick. Here’s what’s actually worth running right now — plus the new season’s best attachments and maps — based on current patch notes and tier-list consensus rather than launch-week guesses.

Best Assault Rifles

FG42 — the headline new weapon this season. A full-auto AR with excellent damage and a respectable fire rate; the trade-off is slower handling and a slight open-bolt delay before your first shot registers, so it rewards players who pre-aim rather than snap-flick. Attachments that tighten horizontal recoil get the most out of it.

DS20 Mirage — the season’s biggest riser. Season 5 gave it shared ammunition between its two fire modes plus improved mobility through the new Dual Fire Kit attachment, turning it from a niche pick into a genuine AR/SMG hybrid that flexes between engagement ranges.

AN-94 — worth a correction here: this gun was actually nerfed in Season 5, losing its four-shot body kill at maximum damage range. It’s still usable, but no longer the free lunch it was last season — don’t build around it expecting last patch’s time-to-kill.

Elsewhere in the AR class, the M8A1 picked up new neck-damage multipliers for a faster effective time-to-kill, making it worth a second look if you wrote it off earlier in the season.

Best SMG

Kogot-7 leads the SMG lane this season, built for the close-range chaos that Resurgence-style maps encourage. If recoil discipline isn’t your thing, it’s the more forgiving pick over the AR options above.

Best Shotgun

M10 Breacher is the current king of the Shotgun class — the go-to for players who want to end fights before recoil control even becomes a factor.

Other Notable Weapon Changes

Two other weapons got reined in this patch: the Carbon 57 SMG’s Fabricator Mag attachment now has a one-second delay before ammo regenerates, closing off its infinite-sustain playstyle, and the Swordfish A1 saw increased burst delay and recoil. If either was your go-to before Season 5, expect a noticeably slower kill pace now.

New Attachments Worth Farming

Season 5’s weekly challenges unlock a handful of attachments worth prioritizing over cosmetics: the Jäger 45 Grid-Breaker Kit converts its host weapon into a recharging EMP device for shutting down enemy equipment and vehicles; the EAM IR-VIZ Thermal Reflex is a lightweight thermal sight that pays off on long-sightline maps; and the M15 Mod 0 AMR .50 Cal Kit converts compatible rifles to .50 caliber for a serious lethality bump at the cost of magazine size.

New Maps to Learn

Three new 6v6 maps landed alongside the weapon changes: Jubilee, a Japanese festival town with a palace courtyard and pachinko room; Frequency, a remaster of the Black Ops 4 mountain listening station; and Dig, a remaster of the Black Ops 2 archaeological site with reworked movement routes. Learning sightlines on Frequency matters most if you’re running a thermal-optic AR build.

What to Expect Going Forward

Treyarch has kept up an active balance cadence all year — expect nerfs to anything that starts to dominate lobbies within a few weeks of a buff, and new weapons to reshuffle rankings again next season. For the full patch breakdown, see Dot Esports’ Season 5 patch notes.
