Deadlock’s “The City Never Sleeps” Update Adds Six New Heroes and Hits a Record 228,000 Players

Valve’s invite-only hero shooter Deadlock just received its biggest content drop since the closed beta began, and players noticed immediately. The update, nicknamed The City Never Sleeps, pushed the game to a new all-time Steam concurrent peak of over 228,000 players, with more than 107,000 still in matches at the moment the numbers were checked.
Deadlock remains playable only through Valve’s invite-only playtest; its Steam page still lists it as a limited test, with no public release date announced.
Six New Heroes, Released Two at a Time
Rather than dropping a full roster update at once, Valve is staggering six new characters across the coming weeks, with new heroes going live every Tuesday and Friday. It’s a release cadence closer to a live-service shooter than Valve’s usual slow-burn updates, and it’s designed to keep the beta’s matchmaking fresh while the game is still being balanced.
A Redesigned Battleground
The update also reworks Deadlock’s central map with new districts, repositioned objectives, and fresh enemy placements. A mysterious new vendor called the Broker has been added to the map as well, giving players another reason to fight for map control rather than just farming lanes.
What Valve Is Prioritizing Next
Looking ahead, Valve says character progression, hideout customization, and alternate game modes are higher priorities than new enemy types or hero model updates, both of which have been pushed back. Deadlock remains in closed beta with no announced release window, but updates like this one suggest Valve is treating it as a long-term project rather than an experiment it might shelve.
Why It Matters
A record concurrent player count during a content update is a strong signal for a game that still requires an invite to play. If Valve keeps shipping heroes at this pace, Deadlock’s eventual full launch could arrive with a much deeper roster than most hero shooters ship with on day one. Players stocking up credit for Steam purchases, including whenever Deadlock opens wider, can grab a Steam Wallet Code (Global), browse more Steam gift cards by region, or check out other action game deals.
