Final Fantasy Resonance Launches October 22 as the Series' First HD-2D Turn-Based RPG, Not a Gacha Port

Square Enix will release Final Fantasy Resonance on October 22, the series’ first game built in the HD-2D style and its first standalone, premium turn-based RPG built from the bones of a shuttered mobile game. Despite its roots in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, Square Enix is emphatic that this is not a gacha release — it’s a one-time purchase with no loot-box monetization.

Stagger Attacks, Legacy Visions, and a New Story in Grandshelt

Combat runs on a timeline system that previews upcoming turns, and staggering enemies grants bonus actions — chain enough of them into a “sweeping stagger” and you unlock a devastating Resonance attack. Outside of battle, players equip Visions, playable versions of legacy Final Fantasy heroes like Cloud and Terra, for extra stats and abilities that can be mixed and matched across the party, on top of summonable espers and airship exploration.

The story is set in the Kingdom of Grandshelt, where the knight Rain and his friend Lasswell investigate a shattered crystal and end up chasing the armored villain Veritas of the Dark, eventually joined by an amnesiac girl named Fina.
