Monster Hunter Wilds Best Weapons Tier List (September 2026): Gunlance, Long Sword, and Great Sword Lead the SS Tier
With Capcom confirming Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance at Tokyo Game Show 2026, now is a good time to lock in a main weapon before the expansion reshuffles the meta with its new Boost Bracer mechanic. Here’s how all 14 weapon types stack up right now, based on current clear times, damage output, and how forgiving each one is to actually play.
SS Tier \xe2\x80\x94 Meta Dominators
Gunlance

Gunlance leads the current meta because its shelling damage ignores monster hitzones entirely, guaranteeing consistent DPS no matter where you’re hitting. The go-to build pairs Rey Dau Gamma armor with Artillery 5, Guard 3, Load Shells, and Guard Up, letting you shell aggressively without worrying about punishing counterattacks.
Long Sword

Long Sword remains one of the most popular weapons in the game, and Foresight Slash is why \xe2\x80\x94 timed correctly, it grants near-invincibility while keeping your Spirit Gauge climbing. Run Critical Eye 7 and Weakness Exploit 3 with Critical Boost 3, mixing in Rey Gore pieces for the Agitator synergy that pushes damage even higher once a monster gets angry.
Great Sword

Focus Mode single-handedly pushed Great Sword into SS tier this update, since it lets you charge attacks noticeably faster without giving up positioning. Build around a Critical Draw and True Charged Slash hybrid, using Focus 3 to speed up your charge windows and mixing Rey Dau Gamma head and chest with Gore Magala arms for the set bonus.
Bow

Bow’s unmatched wound-targeting from a safe distance makes it the best ranged pick in the current meta. Equip Constitution 5 and Stamina Surge 3 to keep your stamina bar from being the limiting factor, then swap coatings and your elemental bow to match whatever weakness the target monster has.
S Tier \xe2\x80\x94 Powerful Competitors
Switch Axe, Sword & Shield, Heavy Bowgun, and Insect Glaive round out S tier. All four can comfortably solo any current-content monster; they simply ask for more precise positioning or ammo management than the SS-tier picks to hit the same clear times.
A Tier and B Tier
Hammer, Dual Blades, Charge Blade, and Light Bowgun sit in A tier \xe2\x80\x94 strong, reliable weapons that lose a little ground in raw damage compared to the top picks. Hunting Horn and Lance round out B tier; both are fully viable in capable hands, but they ask more of the player to keep pace with the weapons above them.
Picking a Main Ahead of Ascendance
Because the Boost Bracer is being built to touch all 14 weapon types rather than replace any of them, none of these rankings should change dramatically once Ascendance lands \xe2\x80\x94 Capcom’s stated goal is to make every weapon feel newly mobile, not to reshuffle who’s strong. If you’re gearing up now, grab Monster Hunter Wilds for PC or top up with a Steam Wallet Code before you dive into the SS-tier builds above.
