Overwatch Season 5 Launches October 6 With New Support Hero Doctrine and a Sombra Rework
Blizzard has confirmed that Overwatch Season 5 begins October 6, closing out the year-long “Reign of Talon” story arc that kicked off when Overwatch 2 rebranded back to simply Overwatch. The new season brings a new Support hero, a role swap for one of the game’s most iconic characters, and a batch of changes aimed at keeping older seasons relevant.
New Support Hero: Doctrine
The new hero is Doctrine, a villainous cyberneticist with vampire-like abilities who fills the Support role. His primary weapon is the Eternal Scepter, and his kit includes Infuse, which enhances his own abilities, Shrouded Momentum, and Invigorating Drones, bat-like drones that heal allies while simultaneously suppressing enemy healing. His ultimate, Deliverance, looks built to swing team fights where sustained healing has been stalling out engagements.
Sombra Moves to Support
The bigger shake-up is Sombra moving from Damage to Support. Her new kit gains two healing abilities for allies, while her signature Hacking ability moves to her Ultimate slot instead of being a basic cooldown. It is one of the more significant role changes in the game’s history and should completely change how she is drafted in competitive play.
Roadhog Gets Nerfed and Reworked
Roadhog is also getting adjusted: the one-shot Chain Hook combo that has frustrated squishier heroes for years is being nerfed, while a new Trash Compactor ability lets him absorb incoming projectiles and convert them into damage.
Unvaulted Battle Passes and More
Season 5 also introduces Unvaulted Battle Passes, letting players buy back in and keep progressing on previous seasons’ passes instead of losing access once a season ends. Expect the usual new Battle Pass, Mythic skins and weapons, hero balance changes across the roster, map updates, and live in-game events tied to the season’s launch.
