Total War: WARHAMMER III‘s Immortal Empires sandbox has had years to settle, and between the Thrones of Decay DLC’s rework of the Chaos Undivided roster and the ongoing Skaven-focused patches, a clear top tier of factions has emerged for solo campaigns on Very Hard and Legendary. Creative Assembly revisits faction balance roughly every six months, so here is where things stand now.

S Tier: The Best Factions in Immortal Empires

Clan Skryre (Ikit Claw): Widely considered the king of Immortal Empires since WARHAMMER II. Ranged Warlock Engineer infantry, Jezzail sniper teams, Doomwheels, and an underground economy through Under-Empires territories give Skryre one of the safest, most mechanically rich starts in the game from a defensible Skavenblight position.

Warriors of Chaos (Archaon): Reworked from one of WARHAMMER I’s weaker factions into one of its best. A forgiving Northern Wastes start, a Chaos Undivided roster that spans all four Marks, and the Chaos Gifts system make Archaon, paired with Kholek Suneater, the strongest overall Chaos package in the game.

Clan Eshin: A mobility-focused assassin faction built around fast army movement, battlefield stalking, Death Globes, and Gutter Runners, launched from a strong Lahmia starting position.

High Elves (Alarielle or Tyrion): Weak before roughly turn 100, but a genuine steamroller after. Sisters of Avelorn archers, Silver Helm and Dragon Prince cavalry, High Magic, and Court Intrigue diplomacy reward players who can survive the early game.

Chaos Dwarfs: One of the best-balanced rosters in the game, with no genuinely weak unit. Demon summonings, Tauri Centaurs, Hellcannons, K’daai Destroyers, and the Tower of Zharr economic building round out a faction with very few weaknesses.

A Tier: Strong, Reliable Picks

Greenskins (Grimgor or Azhag), A+: Lifted into near-S-tier status by the WARHAMMER II rework, with Black Orcs as the standout unit and well-integrated Waaagh! mechanics.
Kislev (Tzarina Katarin): A diverse ice-magic roster with Ice Guard infantry that is also strong in competitive multiplayer.
Dwarfs (Thorgrim): Long but safe campaigns built on strong artillery, Gyrocopters, and Ironbreakers.
Vampire Counts (Vlad): Less dominant after nerfs, but Zombie Dragons and necromancy remain powerful; Vlad ranks above Mannfred and Isabella.
Empire (Karl Franz): Elite Reiksguard cavalry and Demigryphs make the central, hard-to-hold Empire position rewarding once secured.

Multiplayer Considerations and Mid-Pack Factions

This ranking is built for solo Immortal Empires campaigns; competitive multiplayer favors a slightly different set of strengths. Kislev and Greenskins both punch above their solo-campaign weight in team games thanks to aggressive, cost-efficient early units that pressure an opponent before they can snowball their economy, while slower-scaling factions like High Elves lose some of their edge when a match doesn’t run long enough for their late-game roster to come online.

Below the top tiers, Tomb Kings and Nurgle currently sit in the middle of the pack: both are fully playable with distinct, flavorful mechanics, but neither offers a standout strength that matches the economy of Clan Skryre or the roster breadth of Chaos Dwarfs. Newer players should treat Beastmen and Norsca as harder, more punishing starts, since both lack settlements for much of an early campaign and demand a more aggressive, raiding-focused playstyle to stay afloat.
